Fios router blinking white: what it means

Covers the Verizon CR1000A, using Verizon's CR1000A user guide and LED chart. The G3100, G1100 and CR1000B are listed in the old scope but are not covered by a source on this site.

Short answer

On the Verizon CR1000A, which is the Fios router these sources document, fast blinking white means the router is booting or restarting, and solid white means it is working. The G3100, G1100 and CR1000B are not covered by a source here, so check the model on the label.

Confirm the model first

Do not apply this chart to a Fios model other than the CR1000A without a source for it. Do not reset to clear a blink unless Verizon support asks.

#1 What This State Means

Verizon Fios router, white tower design
Verizon Fios router, white tower design. The model number is not printed in this photo.

A “Fios router” blinking white light is, on the models this site can source, the CR1000A’s Router Status light in its start-up state. Verizon’s user guide (S08) lists fast blinking white as the router booting or going through a system restart. It lists solid white as normal operation. So a blinking white light on a Fios router means the start-up is in progress, and the light should turn solid white once the router is working.

The name “Fios router” covers more than one model, and the sources do not settle which models share this chart. The page covers the CR1000A, which is the model the user guide documents. It does not give the G3100, G1100 or CR1000B a light meaning, because no source here covers them. Check the label on your router before you apply this page.

#2 Blinking white on the CR1000A

What you seeWhat Verizon saysWhat to do
Fast blinking whiteBooting, or a system restartWait for it to finish
Solid whiteNormal operationNothing to fix on the router
Solid yellowNo internet connectionCheck the coax and the outage picture
Any red patternSeveral states; the sources disagreeContact Verizon with the pattern

The chart gives the start-up state and the working state. It does not connect a blinking white light to a missing internet connection. The steps below work from the start-up first, then the connection.

#3 Steps to Troubleshoot

  1. Confirm the model. Read the label on the back. This page applies to the CR1000A only.
  2. Confirm it is fast blinking white. A steady white is normal, and a blink is the start-up.
  3. Wait for the start-up to finish. Give the router time to turn solid white before you test the internet.
  4. If it turns solid white, test the internet. The light shows the router is working, so check the devices if they cannot get online.
  5. If it keeps blinking, check the power. Make sure the power cord is fully in the DC jack on the back and the outlet works.
  6. Check the coax cable. Make sure the coax is firmly connected at the wall and at the router.
  7. Contact Verizon if the blink does not stop. Give the model from the label, how long it has blinked, and what you have already checked.

#4 What If Scenarios

Q: My Fios router is blinking white. Is it the same as every Fios model? Not as far as the sources show. The user guide documents the CR1000A chart, and no source here covers the G3100, G1100 or CR1000B. Check the model on the label and use the page for it.

Q: The light has blinked white for a long time after a restart. Should I restart again? Not straight away. The guide gives no time limit for a start-up, and each restart starts it again. Check the power and the coax, then contact Verizon if it does not settle.

Q: The light turned solid white. Is the internet working? Solid white shows the router is working normally, but it does not prove that every device has internet. Test a device, and check the cable and any outage if the internet is down.

Q: The light is blinking white and the internet is down. Which comes first? The start-up. The chart does not link blinking white to no internet, which it ties to solid yellow. Let the router finish starting, then check the internet.

Q: Does a factory reset clear the blinking white? The user guide does not describe a reset as the fix for a start-up, and this page gives no reset duration, because only the user guide gives one. A reset removes your settings, so use it only if Verizon support asks you to.

Q: What should I tell Verizon about my Fios router? Give the exact model from the label on the back, the light’s colour and speed, how long it has blinked or been steady, and what you have already checked. The model is the most important detail, because this page’s chart applies only to the CR1000A, and Verizon can match the light to your model’s own guide.
