#1 What This State Means

Spectrum’s public modem-light page defines each light on its own, and it does not describe an “all lights on” state. So a modem or gateway with every light on has no documented meaning as a whole. What you can do is read each light against its definition and see which of them are on, off or blinking.
Several of the lights you may see together are useful to read together. Power shows AC power is available. Cable Link is on when registration is complete and the gateway is operational. US is on when the internet is available and you can send, or are sending, data. DS is on when the internet is available and you can receive, or are receiving, data. Online is on when the internet is available. Diag is on or blinking when the gateway might be malfunctioning, and Spectrum asks you to contact it.
So an “all on” picture is not a single diagnosis. The most important light in it is Diag. If Diag is on or blinking, Spectrum’s page says to contact Spectrum, whatever the other lights show. If Diag is off, the other labels can tell you more about the connection.
#2 Read the labels together
| Label | What Spectrum’s page says | What an on light tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Power (PWR) | AC power is available | Power is connected |
| Cable Link | On: registration complete and operational | The cable connection is ready |
| US | On: internet available, sending data | The modem is sending |
| DS | On: internet available, receiving data | The modem is receiving |
| Online | On: internet is available | The internet is available |
| Diag | On or blinking: might be malfunctioning, contact Spectrum | A possible fault |
Read Diag first. An on or blinking Diag means contact Spectrum. If Diag is off, the other lights describe the connection: Cable Link on with US and DS on is a working cable connection, and an off light shows which part is not working.
#3 Steps to Troubleshoot
- Check Diag first. If it is on or blinking, Spectrum’s page says the gateway might be malfunctioning, so contact Spectrum.
- Check Power. AC power should be available. If Power is off, check the cord and outlet.
- Check Cable Link. It should be on when registration is complete. A blinking light means startup and registration in progress, and an off light means no cable connectivity.
- Check US and DS together. Both should be on when data is moving. If one is off while Cable Link is on, watch for a short time, since the connection may be settling.
- Check the coax cable. Spectrum’s page says the modem is connected via coax, so make sure it is firmly connected at the modem and the wall.
- Check for a Spectrum outage in your area. An outage can turn off Cable Link and stop US and DS.
- Contact Spectrum if the picture does not match. Give the modem model from its label, which lights are on, off or blinking, and what you have already checked.
#4 What If Scenarios
Q: Every light is on. Is that normal? Spectrum’s page does not describe an “all on” state, so it cannot say that the picture is normal. Check Diag first. If Diag is on or blinking, contact Spectrum. Otherwise read the individual labels.
Q: The Diag light is on but the internet works. Is it safe to ignore? Spectrum’s page says that if Diag is on or blinking, the gateway might be malfunctioning and you should contact Spectrum. Working internet does not change that instruction, so contact Spectrum and describe the Diag light.
Q: Cable Link is on but the internet is down. What now? Cable Link on means registration is complete, so check the US and DS lights and the Diag light. If the internet still does not work, check the devices and any outage, then contact Spectrum.
Q: Should I restart the modem when the lights look wrong? Check the Diag and Power lights, and the coax connection, before anything else. Spectrum’s page asks you to contact it when Diag is on or blinking, so do not rely on repeated restarts.
Q: Does this page apply to my WiFi 6 router? No. Spectrum’s modem-light page covers modems and gateways. For the WiFi 6 router, use the WiFi 6 router lights guide.
