#1 What This State Means

On a Cox gateway, a solid red light is the fault state, and Cox’s tables give it a specific meaning on each device. On the XER10 Panoramic router (S31), solid red means no internet connectivity, and Cox says it can be a hardware, software, Wi-Fi or Ethernet failure, or any impairment that results in the loss of IP connectivity. On the CGM4141 gateway (S32), solid red means offline. So on both devices, the red light says the gateway is not reaching the Cox network.
The tables do not name one cause, and the XER10 table lists several. So a red light tells you the connection is down, not why. The useful first step is the one Cox gives: check the cable connections and reboot the gateway, and if the red stays, contact Cox.
This page covers the XER10 and the CGM4141. The CGM4331 page states only the solid white front light, so it does not describe a red state. The CGM4140COM and TG1682G are not covered by these sources.
#2 Solid red on the XER10 and CGM4141
| Device | Solid red means | Cox’s action |
|---|---|---|
| XER10 Panoramic router | No internet connectivity: hardware, software, Wi-Fi or Ethernet failure, or any impairment that causes loss of IP connectivity | Verify all cable connections, and try resetting the gateway |
| CGM4141 gateway | Offline | Verify all cable connections, and try resetting the gateway |
Both tables give the same first action. The XER10 table also says that for a manual reboot, you should unplug the power cord from the back of the gateway rather than at the wall, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.
#3 Steps to Troubleshoot
- Confirm the device and the light. Read the model on the label. Check that the light is solid red, not flashing.
- Check the cable connections. Cox’s tables say to verify all cable connections, so check the coax at the wall and at the gateway, and the Ethernet cable if one is used.
- Check the power. Make sure the power supply and outlet are secure, and that the outlet is not switched.
- Reboot the gateway the way Cox describes. On the XER10, unplug the power cord from the back of the gateway, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Cox’s tables say not to unplug at the wall for a manual reboot.
- Wait for the boot to finish. After the reboot, the light should go through its boot and registration states before it reaches solid white.
- If the light reaches solid white, the gateway is online. Check the devices that cannot get online.
- If it stays red, contact Cox. Give the model, that the light is solid red, what you have checked, and whether you rebooted it.
#4 What If Scenarios
Q: My Cox gateway is solid red. Should I reset it to factory settings? Cox’s tables say to try resetting the gateway, but they describe the reboot by unplugging the power cord from the back for 30 seconds. A factory reset removes your custom settings, and the XER10 page describes a factory reset through the reset button, so use a factory reset only if Cox support asks you to.
Q: The red light came on after a storm or outage. What now? The tables do not connect the red light to a storm or outage. Check the cables, reboot once as Cox describes, and check for an outage in your area. Contact Cox if the red stays.
Q: My CGM4141 is solid red. Is it the same as the XER10? Both mean the gateway is not connected: offline on the CGM4141, and no internet connectivity on the XER10. The first action is the same on both, but the XER10 table lists more possible causes.
Q: My CGM4331 light is red. Does this page apply? No. The CGM4331 page states only the solid white front light. Contact Cox for its red state if you see one.
Q: The red light flashes instead of staying solid. Is that covered? Not on this page. Cox’s tables describe the solid red state. The XER10 table gives flashing white for a different state, warehouse mode, so do not read a flashing red as the solid red state. Contact Cox with the pattern.
