#1 What This State Means

A router light that is blinking has no single meaning across brands, so this page is a routing page rather than a diagnosis. The sources on this site cover a set of routers and modems, and each one has its own light table. A blink on one of them can be a boot step, a connection state, a WPS pairing, or a fault, depending on the colour, the speed and the device. The question “why is my router blinking” therefore has to be answered for a particular device.
The blinks that the sources document fall into a few groups. On Spectrum’s WiFi 6 router, a flashing blue or green light is booting up, and a pulsing light is connecting to the internet. On the Verizon CR1000A, a fast blinking white light is booting or a system restart, a slow blinking blue light is WPS pairing, and a fast blinking blue light is a successful pairing. On the Cox XER10 and CGM4141, flashing light is a registration, download or IP step, and on the CGM4141 a flashing blue is WPS mode. On the Xfinity gateway, blinking orange is the connecting group. On the AT&T BGW320, a fast blinking red Service light is a network service issue, and a slow blinking red Service light is no broadband connection. On the NETGEAR Orbi, a pulsing white ring is powering up or connecting after WPS.
So the honest “why” is the device’s own reason. Find the device, then find its table on this site.

| Spectrum WiFi 6 router | Pulsing blue or green | Connecting to the internet |
| Verizon CR1000A | Fast blinking white | Booting or system restart |
| Verizon CR1000A | Slow or fast blinking blue | WPS pairing, or pairing success |
| Cox XER10 | Flashing amber or green | IP acquisition, or firmware download |
| Cox CGM4141 | Flashing amber, green or blue | Downstream registration, upstream registration, or WPS mode |
| Xfinity gateway | Blinking orange | Connecting to Xfinity systems |
| AT&T BGW320 | Fast or slow blinking red (Service) | Network service issue, or no broadband |

The table is a summary of the device tables. The per-device guides on this site give the full meanings and the actions.
#3 Steps to find out why it blinks
- Identify the device and brand. Read the label. The same blink means different things on different devices.
- Note the colour, the pattern and the speed. Flashing, pulsing, fast and slow are different states on several devices.
- Find that device’s table on this site. Use the device guide for the meaning and the action.
- Give a boot or connecting blink time to finish. Most blinks on these devices are steps that end on their own.
- Check the cable, power and outage for a fault blink. Red and connecting blinks on these devices point to the connection.
- Contact the provider if the blink is not in the table. Give the model, the colour, pattern and speed, and how long it has lasted.
#4 What If Scenarios
Q: My router blinks. Is it broken? Not necessarily. On most of these devices a blink is a boot or connecting step that finishes on its own. The fault blinks are the red states, and those have their own guides.
Q: My router is not one of the devices here. What do I do? Use that brand’s own light table or contact its provider. These sources do not cover it, so do not apply one device’s blink to another.
Q: Why does the same blink mean different things? Each brand designs its own light table, so the same colour and pattern can be a boot step on one device and a WPS state on another. Read the device first.
Q: Which blink should I worry about most? A red blink, because red is the fault colour on several devices. Check the connection and contact the provider if it continues.
Q: Does the blink mean my internet works? Not on its own. A blink is often a step before the connection is ready, so check the device’s end state, such as solid white or solid blue or green, to see whether it has connected.
