How to fix a blinking orange light on a router

Covers Xfinity gateways, using Xfinity's official light table, and the Cox XER10 and CGM4141, using Cox's tables. Other brands are not covered, and the CGM4331 states only solid white.

Short answer

On an Xfinity gateway, orange is the connecting group: wait about 15 minutes, then restart once if it has not changed. On Cox's XER10 and CGM4141, amber is the boot or registration step, with no action given: wait for solid white. Check the power and coax, and contact the provider if the light stays on.

Wait before you restart

Restarting starts the connecting cycle again, so wait before you restart. The sources do not give a cause for an orange light that stays on, so contact the provider rather than guessing.

#1 What This State Means

An orange light that blinks is read differently by brand, so the fix depends on which router you have. The sources on this site document orange on two brands. Xfinity’s official light table (S04) puts orange in its “all other colour combinations” group, which means connecting to Xfinity systems, and it says to wait about 15 minutes for that cycle to finish. Cox’s tables (S31, S32) give amber rather than orange: solid amber is the boot, and flashing amber is IP acquisition on the XER10 or downstream registration on the CGM4141.

So on either brand, a blinking orange or amber light is a connecting or start-up step, not a fault. The fix is mostly timing: wait for the step to finish, check the cable and power if it does not, and contact the provider if it stays on. The sources do not give a cause for an orange light that persists, so the page does not name one.

The page covers Xfinity gateways and the Cox XER10 and CGM4141. Other brands are not covered, and Cox’s CGM4331 states only solid white.

Only the Xfinity row gives a time. For the Cox rows, the tables give no time, so judge the step by whether it reaches solid white.

#3 Steps to fix a blinking orange or amber light

  1. Identify the brand and the light. Read the label. Note whether the light is orange on an Xfinity gateway, or amber on a Cox device.
  2. Wait for the step to finish. For Xfinity, Xfinity’s table says to wait about 15 minutes. For Cox, wait until the light reaches solid white.
  3. Check the power. Make sure the power cord is connected and the outlet works, and that a Cox outlet is not switched.
  4. Check the coax. Make sure the coax is firmly connected at the wall and at the gateway. Cox’s tables ask you to verify the cable connections for a connection problem.
  5. For Cox, restart once if the light has not changed. On the XER10, Cox’s table says to unplug the power cord at the back, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. The Xfinity table gives no restart step, so for Xfinity wait and contact Xfinity if the light does not change.
  6. Check for an outage. An outage can keep the gateway connecting, so check your provider’s outage tools.
  7. Contact the provider if it stays orange or amber. Give the model, the light’s colour and pattern, how long it has shown that state, and what you have already checked.

#4 What If Scenarios

Q: My Xfinity gateway is orange and blinking. Should I restart it straight away? Not first. Xfinity’s table says to wait about 15 minutes for the connecting cycle. Restarting starts the cycle again, so wait the full time, and contact Xfinity if the orange continues.

Q: My Cox router light is amber. Is it broken? Not on Cox’s tables. Solid amber is the boot and flashing amber is a registration or IP step, and both give no action. Wait for solid white.

Q: The orange has stayed on for hours. What should I do? Check the power, the coax and any outage, then contact the provider. The sources do not give a cause for an orange light that persists, so do not guess one.

Q: Is orange the same on Cox as on Xfinity? No. Cox uses amber, with its own states, and the Xfinity orange is the connecting group. Read the brand’s table, because the same colour can mean different steps.

Q: My router is a different brand. Does this page apply? Not as far as these sources show. Use that brand’s own light table or contact the provider.
