AT&T router power light blinking: what to check

Covers AT&T gateways: BGW320-500 and BGW320-505, plus the BGW210-700, Pace 5268AC and NVG599 that AT&T lists as Smart Home Manager compatible. Blinking power is not documented for any of them in the sources.

Short answer

AT&T's BGW320 guide documents only a solid green power light (powered on) and no light (no power), not a blinking one. The sources do not give a blinking-power meaning for the BGW210, 5268AC or NVG599. Check the cord and outlet, restart once, then contact AT&T before replacing the adapter.

Ask AT&T before buying an adapter

Do not replace the power adapter based on a blinking light alone. The sources we checked do not say a blinking power light means a bad adapter.

#1 What This State Means

A blinking power light is a state AT&T’s BGW320 guide does not describe. The guide documents the back-panel power light in one way only: solid green means the gateway is powered on, and no light means the power is either not connected or there is no power at the wall plug. There is no blinking power state in that legend, so this page cannot tell you what a blinking power light means on a BGW320.

The BGW210-700 guide describes its Power light as green when the gateway has power, and it calls an amber light during power-up normal. The sources do not give a blinking-power meaning for the BGW210, the Pace 5268AC or the NVG599. An earlier draft of this page described a blinking power light as a fault in the power supply, and that claim has no source.

What the sources do support is a short order of checks. Confirm the power cord and outlet, check the other lights, check for an outage, restart once, and then contact AT&T with the exact pattern you see. Do not replace the power adapter on the strength of a blinking light alone; ask AT&T first.

#2 Identify the light and the model

  1. Find the model on the label. Note whether the gateway is a BGW320, BGW210, 5268AC or NVG599.
  2. Find the power light. On a BGW320 it is on the back panel. Note whether it is solid green, off or blinking.
  3. Check the front lights too. The Service light and WPS light tell you more about the gateway’s state than the power light does alone.
  4. For a BGW320, use the BGW320 legend. Solid green on the power light means power is on. No light means no power.
  5. For the BGW210, check the Power light. AT&T’s guide says it should be green, and that an amber light during power-up is normal. For other models, use the model’s AT&T support page.

#3 Steps to Troubleshoot

  1. Check the cord and outlet. Make sure the power cord is firmly connected at both ends and that the outlet has power. Try a different outlet if you have one.
  2. Check the power light’s state. On a BGW320, a solid green power light means power is on. If it is off, the power is not connected, so re-seat the cord.
  3. Check the front Service light. If the power light is green but the Service light is off, AT&T says the BGW320 needs replacing, so contact AT&T.
  4. Check for an outage. Use Smart Home Manager or myAT&T on a mobile device to look for a service problem in your area.
  5. Restart once. AT&T’s manual restart is to unplug the power cord, wait 20 seconds, and plug it back in. Allow up to five minutes to come back online.
  6. Do not swap the power adapter on your own. The sources we checked do not say a blinking power light means a bad adapter. Ask AT&T before you buy a replacement.
  7. Contact AT&T if the light stays blinking. Give the model, the power light’s state and pattern, the Service light’s state, and what you have already checked.

#4 What If Scenarios

Q: The power light is blinking on my BGW320. Is the gateway failing? The BGW320 guide does not describe a blinking power light, so the sources cannot say that it is failing. Check the cord and outlet, restart once, and contact AT&T with the exact pattern.

Q: The power light is solid green but the Service light is off. Is that normal? No. AT&T says that combination means the BGW320 needs replacing. Contact AT&T rather than resetting it.

Q: The power light is off. Is the gateway dead? Not necessarily, but AT&T says no power light means the power is either not connected or there is no power at the wall plug. Check the cord and outlet first. If the power is on and the light stays off, contact AT&T.

Q: Can I reset the gateway to fix the power light? Only by following AT&T’s current reset instructions. AT&T’s documents disagree on the BGW320 reset hold duration, so this page gives no number. A reset removes your Wi-Fi settings, so do not reset until the simpler checks have failed.

Q: Does a power surge cause a blinking power light? The sources we checked do not say so. If you suspect a surge, check the outlet and the cord, and contact AT&T about the gateway rather than assuming the cause.

Q: Should I check the power light before the front lights? Yes. AT&T’s BGW320 guide says no power light means the power is either not connected or there is no power at the wall plug. If the gateway has no power, the front Service light cannot show anything useful, so check the power light and the cord first. Once the power light is solid green, use the Service light to judge the gateway’s state.
