AT&T BGW320 blinking red

BGW320-500GATEWAY

Applies to the AT&T BGW320 gateway family (BGW320-500 / BGW320-505). The light states come from AT&T's BGW320 guide and do not apply to other AT&T gateways.

Short answer

On the AT&T BGW320, blinking red is not one state. Fast blinking on the Service light is a network service issue, so check for an outage and reboot. Slow blinking means no broadband connection, so check the cable first. WPS red is a pairing issue.

Reset timing is an unresolved source conflict

AT&T's documents do not agree on the BGW320 reset hold duration, so this page gives no number. Use AT&T's current support instructions for any reset.

#1 What This State Means

On the AT&T BGW320, “blinking red” is not one state. AT&T’s light guide gives two separate red patterns on the front Service light, and a third red state on the WPS light. The pattern and the light you look at both matter, so check them before you act.

A fast blinking red Service light means a network service issue. AT&T says this may be a momentary problem, may need AT&T to fix, and suggests checking for a service outage in your area and then rebooting the gateway. A slow blinking red Service light means the gateway has no broadband connection. AT&T’s first step there is to check for a loose, disconnected or damaged cable. Those two states have different first steps, so treating them as the same fault leads to the wrong action.

The WPS light has its own red states. Blinking red fast with the Service light solid white means several Wi-Fi devices are trying to connect at once, and AT&T says to wait before trying again. Solid red on the WPS light means pairing has failed. None of these describes the same thing as a blinking red Service light.

These meanings come from AT&T’s guide for the BGW320 family. They do not apply to other AT&T gateways.

#3 Steps to Troubleshoot

  1. Identify which light is red. Check the Service light and the WPS light separately. A red WPS light and a red Service light mean different things.
  2. Identify the speed. Fast blinking and slow blinking are separate states in AT&T’s guide.
  3. For fast blinking red on the Service light, check for an outage. Use Smart Home Manager or myAT&T on a mobile device to look for a service problem in your area.
  4. If there is no outage, reboot once. Unplug the gateway, wait one minute and plug it back in. Allow it to start up until the Service light turns solid white.
  5. For slow blinking red on the Service light, check the cable first. Look for a loose, disconnected or damaged cable at the wall and at the gateway. Reseat it, then watch the light.
  6. Do not reset to fix a slow red light until you have checked the cable. AT&T’s guide mentions pressing and holding the red reset button for this state, but AT&T’s documents disagree on the duration, so use AT&T’s current support instructions for the reset step.
  7. If the red light stays after these steps, contact AT&T. Give the model number, which light is red, whether it is fast or slow, and what you have already checked.

#4 What If Scenarios

Q: The Service light is blinking red fast but the internet works. Is that a problem? AT&T describes this as a network service issue that may be momentary. If the internet works, check the outage tools and keep an eye on the light. If it stays red fast for a long time or the internet drops, contact AT&T.

Q: The Service light is blinking red slow and there is no internet. What should I check first? Check the cable before anything else. AT&T says slow red means no broadband connection and asks you to look for a loose, disconnected or damaged cable. Reseat the coax or phone cable at both ends, then wait to see whether the light changes.

Q: The WPS light is red but the Service light is white. Is the gateway broken? Not necessarily. AT&T’s guide says red on the WPS light with the Service light solid white means pairing has failed. Wait for the light to change, then press the WPS button again to retry.

Q: The Service light is solid red. Is it the same as blinking red? No. Solid red means overheating, or a hardware fault if the WPS light is also solid red. Move the gateway to a flat surface with space around it. If the WPS light is also red, AT&T says a hardware fault needs replacement if a reboot does not fix it.

Q: Can I reset the gateway to clear the red light? Only with AT&T’s current support instructions. The AT&T documents disagree on the reset hold duration, so this page does not give one. A factory reset erases your Wi-Fi name, password and settings, so do not reset until a simpler check has failed.
